Donation by José de Guimarães
José de Guimarães is an artist-collector. His work is inseparable from his collection and vice versa, which he refers to as a "library" of distant cultural traditions – African, pre-Columbian, and Chinese arts – that inspire his work.
As an "artist-collector," José de Guimarães began acquiring, starting in the 1980s, from the European market specializing in artistic, archaeological, and ethnographic objects. The CIAJG (Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães) houses a significant part of his cultural project and authorial work, based on the loan agreement signed between the artist and the Municipality of Guimarães. Today, the CIAJG permanently exhibits this collection of 1,128 objects, allowing the public to enjoy José de Guimarães' work. In 2024, the artist and the Municipality will sign a new agreement, this time a donation of 98 pieces, both his own work and African arts. This symbolic gesture renews the cultural project of the CIAJG and the purposes of its mission, projecting a commitment to the future.
